The large number and variety of surviving specimens suggest that spears were more commonly used than swords, as they were not only easier to make, but also much cheaper. The so called winged or lugged spear, which mainly served as a thrusting weapon and is often associated with the Normans, actually has its origins in the Frankish Carolingian Empire. After the Vikings took over this spear, it continued
